Beginning January 1, 2026, Louisiana insurers must cover certain cancer-related treatments in plans providing hospital, medical, or surgical benefits. These treatments are acupuncture, cryotherapy, and scalp cooling when recommended by nationally recognized cancer treatment guidelines. Covered scalp cooling devices must be reusable, serve primarily a medical purpose, and prevent or reduce chemotherapy-related hair loss. Plans may limit acupuncture for active cancer treatment to 15 visits per plan year. They must cover additional visits when both the cancer treatment guidelines and the treating doctor recommend them. Plan deductibles, coinsurance, copayments, and prior approval requirements may still apply. New policies, contracts, and plans issued on or after January 1, 2026, must comply. Existing coverage must comply by its renewal date, no later than January 1, 2027.
