Responder plates lose fees, require yearly renewal

Beginning January 20, 2026, eligible New Jersey fire department, first aid squad, and rescue squad members pay no extra special-plate fee. Paid, partly paid, and volunteer members qualify with proof of current membership accepted by the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission. The vehicle must be owned or leased by the member, owned by their spouse or parent, or owned by a business where the member is the main owner or stockholder. Regular vehicle registration fees still apply. Plate holders must renew every year and show continued membership using proof accepted by the commission.
