Free tutoring search for New Jersey families

Effective January 12, 2026, New Jersey’s Department of Education must partner with a nonprofit to create and maintain a tutoring registry. The public, searchable list must appear on the department’s website, with names, contact details, subject expertise, and tutoring schedules. Eligible providers include New Jersey teachers with provisional or standard instructional certificates and retired New Jersey teachers in good standing at retirement. Students at New Jersey two- or four-year colleges, industry professionals and organizations with relevant expertise, and others the department approves can also apply. Listed providers cannot charge or receive fees for services connected with the registry. The list must warn that provider information is not independently verified and the department does not endorse or recommend tutoring quality. The law does not guarantee that a tutor will be available.

Tutor background checks and possible refunds

Effective January 12, 2026, individual tutors must complete the required criminal history check before joining the registry. New Jersey teachers with provisional or standard instructional certificates are exempt if they already completed a check required by law. Organizations must submit a statement assuring that tutors working on their behalf have completed the required check. The Department of Education may repay individuals for required check costs, but repayment is not guaranteed. The law sets no reimbursement amount.
