Parents face penalties for children's disorderly conduct

Beginning January 12, 2026, New Jersey sets new penalties for parents or legal guardians with legal custody of a juvenile. Each penalty requires a juvenile delinquency finding and the adult's willful or wanton disregard in supervising and controlling the juvenile. Improper behavior under N.J.S.2C:33-2(a) that causes property damage brings a $1,000 civil fine, collectible through a summary civil proceeding. A juvenile's first offense of inciting a public brawl makes the adult guilty of a petty disorderly persons offense. A juvenile's second or later offense of inciting a public brawl makes the adult guilty of a disorderly persons offense.
