Beginning May 8, 2025, New Jersey State Police Retirement System members can buy pension credit for military academy enrollment. The enrollment must have led to a bachelor's degree. Academy time falls within the 10-year limit for buying pre-membership military service credit; qualifying veterans can buy up to five additional years. Members cannot buy credit for service that already supports a vested retirement benefit in another system when they apply. Members pay the purchase cost, not their employer. Members do not pay related costs for financing retiree pension-adjustment or health-care benefits.
Beginning May 8, 2025, New Jersey State Police Retirement System members can buy pension credit for all or part of academy enrollment, class two officer work, or both. State Police Academy graduates qualify only if academy enrollment led directly to retirement system membership. Class two work must have been for a New Jersey public employer, with a break before membership under 365 days. A year of class two service must average at least 10 workdays monthly and total at least 120 workdays. Shorter service must average at least 10 workdays monthly for each month served. Members pay an age-based actuarial price using the greater of current salary or their highest qualifying annual pay from a prior membership fiscal year. Installments must equal at least half the full normal contribution, with payments spread over no more than 10 years. Members retiring before payments end receive proportional credit, unless they pay the remaining amount in a lump sum at retirement.
