Beginning August 1, 2026, New Jersey expands road-sharing safety lessons in driver courses, permit exams, manuals, and parent brochures. Topics include pedestrians, cyclists, skaters, scooter riders, and other non-motorized road users. Courses and exams cover drivers’ duties and penalties when approaching and passing these users, bicycle lanes, intersections, and safe exiting. Approved classroom courses must last at least 30 hours and include the required material to keep approval. Permit applicants must pass the exam; the state may add up to 20 questions on young-driver safety topics. The manual explains drivers’ passing duties and penalties, plus safety steps for other road users sharing roads with motorists. Parents or guardians of beginning drivers under 18 receive the safety brochure when the permit is issued.
