New trial periods for local government workers

Beginning January 12, 2026, New Jersey local-government employees receiving regular civil service appointments must complete a working test period. This on-the-job test is part of the exam process. It lasts four months, but the Civil Service Commission can extend it to six months. Entry-level law enforcement officers, correction officers, and firefighters have a 12-month test period. Employers must give employees progress reports under commission rules, plus a final report to the employee and commission. Employees can be dismissed at the end of the test period, or for cause during it. Promoted employees keep permanent status in their lower job and can return there if they fail the test period. Employees removed for cause cannot return to that lower job.
