Retirees can challenge late 9/11 registration denials

Beginning July 23, 2025, certain New Jersey public pension retirees can ask their pension board to reconsider a 9/11 registration denial. They must have filed an eligibility registration form and been denied because they missed the earlier registration period. This applies to the Public Employees’, Police and Firemen’s, and State Police retirement systems. Reconsideration does not guarantee approval or pension payments.

Medical proof required for 9/11 disability pensions

Beginning July 23, 2025, covered New Jersey public workers and retirees must meet medical-proof rules for 9/11 disability pension claims. They must have passed a public-service entry physical or provide sufficient evidence from other exams near entry showing no qualifying condition. This applies to disability presumptions and requests to recalculate retirement payments based on a qualifying World Trade Center condition. Covered work occurred at the site from September 11 through October 11, 2001. The presumption generally requires at least eight hours of work. Shorter service qualifies only for September 11–12, 2001, when a documented on-site injury forced the person to stop before eight hours. That same injury must be the condition claimed. Recalculation requires at least eight hours of work and a medical board finding that the work caused the qualifying disability. Retirees must apply within 180 days after they knew, or reasonably should have known, of the disability and its connection to the work. Covered systems include police, fire, and State Police pensions, plus specified public employee pension groups, including emergency medical technicians and certain workers who failed police-and-fire enrollment age or medical requirements.
