New licensing paths for New Jersey accountants

For applications received starting February 19, 2026, New Jersey offers two routes to a certified public accountant license. One requires a bachelor's degree or higher and two years of qualifying experience. The other requires 150 credit hours of education and one year of qualifying experience. Both require accredited education with an accounting focus and related professional courses. Experience must meet State Board of Accountancy rules and be verified by a licensed accountant. It can come from government, industry, academia, or public practice. Applicants must have good moral character and pass the CPA exam unless they qualify for a waiver.

Out-of-state accountants keep New Jersey practice rights

Beginning February 19, 2026, qualifying out-of-state certified public accountants keep their New Jersey practice rights. They must hold a valid license issued by another state before that date. They must also have New Jersey practice privileges on February 19, 2026. They do not need a New Jersey license, board notification, or a fee to retain those privileges.
