Lower water charges for local fire services

Beginning January 12, 2026, New Jersey limits municipal water authorities' charges for fire protection systems. Authorities cannot charge designated fire districts to the extent those charges are imposed on water customers who also pay district taxes. For fire departments, the same protection applies when those customers pay taxes to the local government funding the department. The law does not require lower household water bills.
