Patients get help appealing insurance denials

Beginning June 30, 2025, New Jersey patients can authorize providers to challenge denied, reduced, or ended benefits through independent review. The review covers medical necessity or appropriate care, not benefits excluded from the patient's plan. Patients or providers must finish any insurer appeals process and apply within 60 days after the insurer's final decision. Before hospital services, patients or their designees can authorize a provider to handle all insurer and independent appeal stages. Patients can revoke consent at any time. Providers must notify patients when starting an appeal and each time it advances, including to independent review.
