Health coverage help for State Police survivors

Beginning January 20, 2026, eligible State Police survivors gain health coverage help tied to the law’s accidental death benefits. This includes eligible surviving spouses, former surviving spouses, and children. New Jersey pays health premiums when survivors remain covered by employer-sponsored insurance or can qualify for that coverage again. If employer coverage is no longer available, they can enroll in the State Health Benefits Program.

State Police survivor payments expand with limits

Beginning January 20, 2026, more survivors of qualifying New Jersey State Police retirees can receive accidental death benefits. Eligible survivors include surviving spouses, former surviving spouses, and children; legal guardians can apply for children. The retiree must have belonged to the State Police Retirement System during World Trade Center rescue, recovery, or cleanup work. The medical board must link the qualifying condition to that work. Survivors must document that the retiree qualified, or would have qualified, for the related special retirement allowance. The retirement board reviews applications and can request more information, but the former sworn-statement requirement is removed. Approved survivors receive annual payments and a lump sum capped in total at 3.5 times the retiree’s final compensation. Apply by the later of January 20, 2028, or two years after the death. Annual payments apply only after the 2021 law’s effective date; no retroactive difference payments back to death are allowed. A qualifying spouse receiving ordinary survivor pension payments can apply to switch to accidental death benefits. If a former surviving spouse receives accidental death benefits, a child receiving ordinary survivor pension payments cannot also receive them.
