Interlock rules and relief for impaired drivers

These New Jersey rules cover impaired-driving offenses on or after April 3, 2025, and expire January 1, 2029. First-time offenders with blood alcohol levels from 0.08% to below 0.15% lose driving rights until installing an ignition interlock device. At 0.15% or higher, first-time offenders lose driving rights for three months after installation. People arrested for specified first or repeat offenses can install a device before conviction and get an interlock-only license notation. Eligible drivers earn one day of driving-ban credit for every two days with both the device and license notation. Causing serious bodily injury to another person bars credit. General credit also excludes specified drug-related offenses and commercial-vehicle controlled-substance offenses. Voluntary installation and the license notation before conviction also exempt eligible first-time offenders from the specified monetary fine. That exemption requires a valid New Jersey license in good standing from the offense through conviction.
