Teaching grants expand to retirees and faculty

Beginning July 1, 2026, New Jersey expands grants for teaching secular science, technology, engineering, and math at participating nonpublic schools. Retired public-school teachers qualify with a non-disability Teachers’ Pension and Annuity Fund pension and a valid standard teaching certificate with a STEM endorsement. County college faculty qualify if they currently teach STEM and participate in a collective bargaining agreement. Grants equal the prior school year’s statewide average hourly teacher salary × teaching hours × 1.25. Nonprofits administer the grants, and available funding must fully cover current public-school teachers’ applications before remaining money goes to retirees and faculty.

Retired teachers keep pensions while teaching

Beginning July 1, 2026, retired Teachers’ Pension and Annuity Fund members generally keep their pensions while teaching under the grant program. They are exempt from rules that cancel pensions, require rejoining the pension plan, or provide an additional retirement allowance. Those usual rules still apply when retirees return to their former employer within 180 days. Retirement must be genuine, and the grant-program job cannot be arranged before retirement. The protection applies only if the pension system keeps its qualified status under federal law.
