Qualifying chiefs can work past age 65

Beginning January 20, 2026, qualifying chiefs can keep working and remain in the Police and Firemen’s Retirement System past age 65. They can serve through the end of the calendar year they turn 67. This covers police or fire chiefs serving when P.L.2022, c.9 took effect. It also covers deputy police chiefs serving then who became police chiefs by the last day of the 12th calendar month after that date. Both groups must turn 65 between that earlier law’s effective date and the last day of the 60th calendar month afterward. Service after 65 requires written approval from the authority responsible for selecting the chief. The retirement system’s Board of Trustees must report to the Governor and Legislature on how many chiefs stayed, their service after 65, and the effects on the retirement system. That report is due within 30 days after the last day of the 60th calendar month following January 20, 2026.
