Pension credit relief for county fire instructors

Beginning December 12, 2024, New Jersey grants qualifying county fire instructors service credit and membership benefits in the Public Employees' Retirement System (PERS) for their enrolled instructor service. To qualify, instructors must have joined PERS before November 1, 2008, and been employed by a county on December 12, 2024. They must also have kept continuous PERS membership, taught as county fire instructors every calendar year of membership, earned more than $1,500 annually in that job, and held permanent career civil-service status. A separate path restores previously denied credit for county fire-instructor service: instructors must have enrolled before November 1, 2008, and received notice of ineligibility within the five years before December 12, 2024. To restore that credit, they must repay any contributions and interest returned when their service was ruled ineligible.
