Firearm owners face stricter storage rules
Firearm owners and custodians must lock a rifle, shotgun, or firearm when it is outside their immediate control. They can use a suitable safe or a gun lock that prevents firing. Unsafe storage is a class A misdemeanor when the owner knew or had reason to know a minor or prohibited person was likely to get access, and that person does. Exceptions cover unlawful entry, lawful self-defense, and certain lawful uses by people under 18. These rules take effect 90 days after enactment, and the law repeals an earlier firearm-storage provision.
Gun safety education and yearly reports
People convicted of unsafe-storage offenses must receive safe-storage materials developed by the Office of Gun Violence Prevention. That office and the Division of Criminal Justice Services collect and analyze data on injuries and deaths of minors linked to unsafe storage. The agencies must post a public report within one year of the law’s effective date and every year after that.
