Victims get rights pamphlet and contact info

The law requires the district attorney or the court to give crime victims a rights pamphlet at sentencing or as soon as possible. It goes to the victim, a parent or guardian if the victim is a minor, or a surviving family member in a homicide. The Division of Criminal Justice Services prepares the pamphlet with the Office of Victim Services and the Office of Victim Assistance, and it is sent to every district attorney’s office. The pamphlet must include the state corrections Office of Victim Assistance address and phone, including a toll‑free number. It advises victims to use that toll‑free number to update their contact information. It also helps victims track the defendant’s incarceration status through corrections.
