Bill Overview

Analyzed Economic Effects

3 provisions identified: 0 benefits, 0 costs, 3 mixed.

2026 cap on class tax shares for non-city areas

For non-city special assessing units using the 2026 roll, a property class’s tax share cannot rise more than 1 percentage point from last year’s adjusted share. If normal calculations give a bigger jump, officials cap the class at 1% and raise other classes so totals stay at 100%. This slows bill increases for capped classes, while other classes may pay a larger share.

Nassau: local 2026 1% cap on class shares

In approved assessing units in Nassau County, a 1% cap on 2026-roll class share increases applies only if the local government adopts it. A class’s share cannot rise more than 1 percentage point over last year’s adjusted share. If the normal math is higher, officials cap it and raise other classes so totals stay at 100%. This can slow increases for capped classes, while other classes may pay a bigger share.

Suffolk: caps on class tax share increases

In approved assessing units in Suffolk County, the law limits how much a property class’s share can rise in listed years. The 2003–2004, 2004–2005, and 2005–2006 rolls keep a 2% cap. Many later listed rolls use a 1% cap, now including 2026–2027. If a class would rise above its cap, it is limited and other classes are raised so totals equal 100%. This slows increases for capped classes but can shift more of the levy to other classes.
