Bill Overview

Analyzed Economic Effects

2 provisions identified: 1 benefits, 0 costs, 1 mixed.

Fire insurance taxes fund local firefighter aid

Starting with premiums received on or after January 1, 2027, the association collects fire-insurance taxes for the fire company's service area. It also receives a share of another fire-insurance tax, based on business written in that area. The association must use the money for its purposes, such as helping volunteer firefighters and their families. The law sets no tax rate or dollar amount.

Support for local volunteer firefighters

The law creates an association to help injured, disabled, or needy volunteers and their families. Active volunteers and former volunteers who earned exempt status through the fire company may qualify. Paid firefighters and people removed for cause without reinstatement cannot join. Membership ends if a volunteer leaves active service before completing five years. The association adopts bylaws and elects a board of at least seven trustees. It must get written government approval before opening or running a home or institution that requires approval.
