The law takes effect November 1, 2025, and provides an Oklahoma income tax credit starting with tax year 2026. Firefighters qualify if trained or certified to prevent and control fires in residential buildings, commercial buildings, and wildlands. The credit covers cancer-detection procedures the firefighter paid for, to the extent insurance did not cover the cost. Those costs must also be money the firefighter cannot recover. Covered cancers include lung, prostate, testicular, skin, colon, breast, and other cancers deemed more common among firefighters. The annual credit equals eligible costs, up to $250, but cannot reduce income tax owed below zero. Unused credit carries forward, in order, through the next five tax years. Starting in tax year 2028, a $1.5 million statewide annual limit can reduce credits. The Oklahoma Tax Commission publishes the adjustment percentage by January 1 of each affected year. It calculates that percentage by dividing $1.5 million by credits claimed two years earlier. If credits exceed $1.5 million in a calendar year, the commission allows the excess but factors it into the next year's adjustment.
