New license for assistant funeral directors
Beginning July 1, 2025, Oklahoma provides a separate assistant funeral director license, distinct from apprentice registration. Applicants must be at least 18, have 60 college semester hours or equivalent from a regionally accredited school, and pass the Oklahoma funeral director state law exam. They must show good character and fitness; a felony conviction is not an automatic bar. Assistants must work for and be supervised by a licensed funeral director in charge, helping with funeral services, arrangements, or interments; each director can have only one assistant. Assistants face continuing education and discipline rules, and must register again under a new supervising director when changing employers.
Assistant funeral directors pay licensing fees
Beginning July 1, 2025, an assistant funeral director license or renewal costs $150 until the Board sets fees by rule. The application fee includes the license for the current year or the part of the year remaining. Licenses expire December 31 and require annual renewal; unpaid renewal fees double after that date. The license automatically ends if renewal fees remain unpaid by April 30 of the following year. The state law exam costs $100 under the temporary fee schedule, payable before the exam and nonrefundable.
Funeral Board continues with member requirements
The law re-creates the Oklahoma Funeral Board as the former board's successor and continues it through July 1, 2029. The Governor appoints seven members: five licensed practitioners with seven consecutive years of Oklahoma experience, and two public members. Beginning July 1, 2025, practitioner members must keep active licenses and live in Oklahoma throughout their service. Members serve five-year terms, with a two-consecutive-term limit; filling an unfinished term does not count, and members serve until successors qualify. When possible, one public member is a health-care professional without funeral-industry ties, and practitioner vacancies use an association's five-candidate list. The act includes both a July 1, 2025 effective-date reference and an emergency clause making it effective upon enactment.
