Practical nurses gain more supervisor options

Beginning November 1, 2025, Oklahoma law broadens who can supervise or direct licensed practical nurses. The listed supervisors are registered nurses, licensed physicians, and dentists.

Supervised nurse prescribers must file agreements

Advanced nurses without independent prescribing authority must have a supervising physician available for advice, emergencies, and referrals. Contact can be direct, by phone, or through other appropriate electronic means. Beginning November 1, 2025, nurses using supervision agreements must file them with initial and renewal applications to the Nursing Board. Agreement changes must be filed within 30 days and take effect when filed. The Board must set rules for documenting supervision, including written agreements.

Advanced nurse prescribers face education requirements

Beginning November 1, 2025, initial prescribing applicants must hold a master’s degree or higher. The degree must be in a nurse practitioner, clinical nurse specialist, or nurse-midwife role. Nurses renewing independent prescribing authority must document at least 40 hours of Category I continuing medical education. Those hours must fall within the two years before the renewal application. Drug-treatment, pain-management, or opioid education counts toward that total when it meets Category I standards.

Advanced nurses gain bounded drug prescribing

Beginning November 1, 2025, pharmacy law recognizes authorized advanced nurses as prescribers within their practice area. Approved nurse practitioners, clinical nurse specialists, and nurse-midwives can prescribe and administer Schedule III–V controlled drugs after completing required registration. Nurses without independent authority need physician supervision and cannot prescribe a drug schedule for which that physician is not registered. Pharmacists can fill controlled-drug prescriptions from qualifying Oklahoma-licensed advanced nurses and Oklahoma-licensed physician assistants prescribing under practice agreements. Prescriptions must identify the nurse and, when required, the supervising physician; the drug label must name the nurse.

Qualified advanced nurses gain independent prescribing

Beginning November 1, 2025, Oklahoma’s Nursing Board reviews applications and can grant independent prescribing authority to nurse practitioners, clinical nurse specialists, and nurse-midwives. Applicants need a valid license in good standing, an accredited graduate nursing degree, and national specialty certification. They also need 6,240 hours of physician-supervised prescribing experience; hours earned before the effective date can count. Out-of-state applicants with prescribing privileges in the same role and specialty can submit supervision agreements or proof of meeting independent-authority requirements. Authority covers only their practice area and does not allow drug dispensing, except for professional samples allowed by federal rules.
