Cities must maintain school zone signs
Beginning Nov 1, 2026, after the state builds a school zone, the city or county that asked for it must run and maintain all school zone signs and equipment. The DOT does the construction. The local government pays the ongoing costs. The law does not set dollar amounts.
45 mph school zones on state highways
Beginning Nov 1, 2026, the Oklahoma DOT sets a 45 mph school zone on a state highway when a city or county asks and the road meets one of three tests. The road has four or more lanes and runs next to the school. Or it is posted 65 mph or higher, has no grade-separated off-ramp or frontage road that serves the school, and runs next to the school. Or the highway center line is within 150 yards of the school property line. School means K–12 public or private schools recognized by state law. The DOT puts up signs with flashing beacons at the start and end. The lower limit applies when the beacons flash for drop-off and pick-up, and for any extra hours the school sets and the DOT approves. The DOT may consult with the school and local officials. These zones use the same enforcement rules as other school zones.
