More prison education and job programs
Beginning November 1, 2026, the Board can create and run programs for education, job training, and rehabilitation in prisons. The Board may lease property as needed to support prison industries. The Board may buy, build, improve, and operate facilities to foster prison industries.
Leadership and rules for Corrections Board
Beginning November 1, 2026, the Corrections Board must elect a chair, vice-chair, and secretary. The Board adopts its own rules and may adopt an official seal. Members get travel costs repaid under the State Travel Reimbursement Act while on Board business. The Board appoints the Department Director and sets the Director’s pay.
Private prison contracts and paid training
Beginning November 1, 2026, the Board may sign contracts with private prison companies. The Board offers training to private prison staff and other government employees on a fee basis. Trainees or their employers pay the training fees.
Stronger oversight and reporting in prisons
Beginning November 1, 2026, the Board sets policies for how the Department of Corrections runs. The Board may require the Director or staff to post bonds for faithful performance when needed. The Department must notify the Board about its annual budget work program. The Department must also notify the Board of any inmate death in custody.
