Annual folic acid education for women

The Department of Health and the Office of the Procuradora de las Mujeres run a yearly media campaign on folic acid. It reaches women who are pregnant or can get pregnant. The campaign explains the health benefits of folic acid.

Free folic acid handouts at clinics

Gynecology and obstetrics offices must give free folic acid information to pregnant and reproductive-age patients. Offices keep a signed record from each recipient. Within 90 days of the law’s start, the Health Department prepares the materials and stocks them in all regional offices. Clinics must start handing them out within 120 days after the law is approved.

New rules and fines for women's health clinics

The law takes effect immediately upon approval. The Department of Health can issue rules to enforce this law and to measure the campaign’s results. If a covered clinic does not comply, the Department can fine it $100 to $500 per violation.
