Rhode Island bans invasive plant trade and possession

The law bans importing, transporting, selling, or buying non-native invasive terrestrial plants in Rhode Island. It also bans importing, transporting, selling, buying, or possessing non-native freshwater invasive aquatic plants. The Director defines which species are covered and keeps the official lists for both land and freshwater plants. Breaking these rules can bring a fine up to $500. The law starts January 1, 2027, but the bans and fines only apply after the Director’s rules are issued and take effect.
