Fee waiver and plates for disabled veterans

The law waives the yearly registration fee and the license to operate that vehicle for some disabled veterans. It applies if you have a 100% service-connected disability, are age 75 or older with a 70% rating, or are rated individually unemployable. You must be honorably discharged and show VA certification or other acceptable proof. The DMV issues one set of “Disabled Veteran” plates for a car or a commercial vehicle up to 12,000 pounds. After the veteran dies, the surviving spouse may keep the plates for life or until remarriage.
