Adaptive plates and parking for people with disabilities

Rhode Island now issues an adaptive vehicle license plate. You qualify if you have a permanent mobility impairment certified by a licensed physician or physical therapist, and your vehicle is modified. Apply to the DMV with medical proof and proof of the modification. You pay normal registration fees. Vehicles with this plate can use marked loading and unloading zones and areas with extra space for ramps or transfers. These vehicles are exempt from some height, width, or bumper limits, as allowed by state law. You must display the adaptive plate to use these privileges. The DMV also issues plates with the International Symbol of Access for private cars and noncommercial pickups for qualified individuals.
