Towns can raise business property taxes

Rhode Island city and town councils can adopt higher tax rates on taxable tangible personal property, including business equipment and inventory. This requires an ordinance in the year after a revaluation, statistical revaluation, or update. The rate cannot exceed twice the rate for another property class. The municipality must document that the higher rate prevents a revaluation-driven drop in that class’s estimated total tax collections. Written approval from the Office of Municipal Affairs is required. This allows higher taxes for affected owners but does not require a local increase or set any owner's bill.
