Covered workers get retirement benefits, not cash

Beginning July 1, 2025, contractors and subcontractors must provide required retirement or pension benefits rather than their cash equivalent. This applies to covered Rhode Island public works and school transportation contracts exceeding $1,000. Employees employed for 90 days or less are exempt. The Rhode Island labor department sets the required benefits by job type and may require proof they are provided. Workers receive retirement benefits but lose the cash option; the law does not specify a change in benefit value.
