Payment rules for South Dakota lawmakers

The Executive Board sets aside House and Senate funds for lawmakers’ in-state and out-of-state travel, salary, or daily allowances. Costs tied to legislative sessions are excluded. The Legislative Research Council pays approved costs, up to each chamber’s allocated funds. The House speaker approves representatives’ costs; the Senate president pro tempore approves senators’ costs. Lawmakers can appeal payment decisions to their chamber’s Executive Board members.
