Fee caps for barbers and shops

Effective upon passage and approval, the law authorizes South Dakota's Board of Barber Examiners to set fees by rule within caps. The caps are $300 for an exam and certificate, and $300 for annual certificate renewal. Restoring an expired certificate costs up to $35 plus $25 for each year expired. Annual caps are $600 for a barber-school permit and $150 for a shop or school inspection. Annual shop license fees cannot exceed $300 plus $20 per chair; the Board may set fees below these caps.

Barbers must renew by May 31

Registered barbers who keep practicing must renew their certificates by May 31 each year. A certificate that is not renewed expires June 1.

Barbershops face inspections and repeat charges

The Board must inspect each barbershop annually after the initial inspection required by law. The Board may charge for the annual inspection. If a shop fails and another inspection is needed, the Board may charge the owner the repeat inspection's cost. The law does not set a dollar amount for that repeat charge.

Barbershops face yearly licensing requirements

Barbershop operators must submit annual license applications on Board forms no later than June 1; licenses expire May 31. Operating without a Board license or a registered barber's direct supervision and management is a petty offense. Shops must display their licenses where people can easily see them. A license cannot transfer to another person, another location, or a new operator at the same location.
