South Dakota's State Electrical Commission can set and collect inspection fees for covered electrical work, including work on homes. A $150 minimum applies whenever the inspection fee calculated under the law is lower. New residential installations and service connections on other installations have fees based on electrical capacity, capped at $390 plus circuit fees. The circuit installation or alteration fee is capped at $65 before applying the minimum. Remodeling charges have limits of $3 per opening or connection, with $1.50 for each additional opening or connection. Lighting charges are capped at $3 per fixture for the first 40 fixtures and $1.50 for each additional fixture. Remodeling charges for a motor or special equipment are capped at $18. Per-unit limits are $150 for apartments, $100 for mobile-home service and feeders, and $25 for recreational-vehicle service. Each late correction order or wiring-permit procedure has a $250 limit; wiring permits have a $20 limit. Out-of-state-manufactured modular homes and structures have a $210 daily limit, plus the inspector's travel and living expenses. These schedule limits are subject to the $150 minimum inspection fee. The commission can also set the allowed number of inspections for each installation by rule.
