Students advise school boards without pay
Tennessee school boards serving at least one high school must adopt and carry out a policy allowing a high school student adviser. The student serves at public meetings without voting rights, pay, or repayment of service costs. Boards may set extra rules for who can serve. Districts are exempt if, before July 1, 2025, they created a regularly meeting advisory group with at least one student from each high school to advise the board. The policy-adoption requirement took effect when the act became law; all other provisions took effect July 1, 2025.
