Pay limits for local utility commissioners
Beginning July 1, 2025, utility district commissioners generally serve without pay in Tennessee counties with 158,100 to 158,200 people. The population test uses the 2020 federal census or any later federal census. This rule overrides conflicting laws. A board can adopt a resolution allowing each commissioner up to $500 per meeting for no more than 12 meetings per calendar year. These meeting payments are not automatic.
