More courts handle protection orders for victims
Tennessee expands court options for protection orders involving domestic abuse, sexual assault, or stalking victims. Circuit courts exercising criminal authority can handle protection-order matters while hearing a criminal case involving one of these victims. Depending on the county, court options also include courts with domestic relations authority, criminal courts, and general sessions courts. The law preserves the rule that criminal courts cannot decide child custody, visitation, or support in this role. These changes took effect when the act became law.
