Stronger protections for school bus families
Effective upon becoming law, Tennessee bars government entities and local school boards from extending government immunity to independent school bus contractors. This applies when contractors provide school-related transportation for a local school board. School board contracts must require enough liability insurance to meet applicable legal requirements for these services. Proof can include an insurer’s certificate listing the school board as an additional insured party. These changes support claims by people harmed during school transportation, but set no dollar amount and do not guarantee payment.
