Pet owners: abandoning animals no longer crime

Beginning July 1, 2025, Tennessee no longer treats abandoning an animal in your custody as a crime under this law. The rule that leaving an animal at or near a shelter was not a defense is also removed. Other animal cruelty or neglect crimes still apply.
