Mental health team coverage with limits
Beginning January 1, 2026, Tennessee health plans offered, delivered, or issued for delivery must cover and pay for psychiatric collaborative care if they cover mental health and substance use services. This care brings together a primary care provider, a care manager, and a psychiatric consultant. The team regularly checks patients with validated tools, reviews their care, and adjusts treatment as needed. Plans may deny coverage or payment when services are not medically necessary. TennCare and CoverKids may offer this coverage under their medical-necessity rules, but the law does not require them to.
