TBI classifies registered sex offenders

The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI) now classifies people who must be on the sex offender registry. TBI places each person in one of three groups: sexual offender, violent sexual offender, or violent juvenile sexual offender. This applies to people with qualifying convictions and others who must register under state law. TBI may use investigative reports, prosecutor files, court records, and other credible information to decide. TBI must notify the person of the classification. The law takes effect upon becoming law.
