Tennessee requires classifications for registered sex offenders
The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation must classify people required to register who have a qualifying conviction under § 40-39-202. It must also classify people required to register under § 40-39-203(a)(2). Classifications are sexual offender, violent sexual offender, or violent juvenile sexual offender. The agency must also decide whether each person is an offender against children and notify them of their classification. It can use investigative reports, prosecutors’ files, court records, or other credible information. The law took effect when it became law.
