School threats trigger mandatory reporting and penalties

Beginning July 1, 2026, anyone who knows of a credible school mass-violence threat must report it immediately. This covers threats on school property or at school-related activities. Reports must go to both local law enforcement with jurisdiction and the school facing the threat. A credible threat is one that makes a reasonable person expect an act of mass violence. Include all known details: the threat’s nature, the threat-maker’s name and address, facts requiring the report, and other relevant information. Knowingly failing to report is a Class B misdemeanor. The law also replaces a related mental health law reference, changing § 33-7-301 to Title 33, Chapter 6, Part 4.
