State ownership plan for Polk Home
Beginning July 1, 2026, the Tennessee Historical Commission must negotiate in good faith to buy the James K. Polk Home in Columbia. The law sets no purchase price and does not guarantee a transfer. It ends the existing trust arrangement and provides for the commission to hold legal title. The commission may restore and improve the home, but spending requires money specifically approved in the General Appropriations Act. The law itself provides no funding. A Tennessee nonprofit formed expressly to restore, maintain, and operate the home may manage it under commission guidelines or a contract. The law calls for preserving the home as a museum open to the public. The commission must report annually to the Governor and legislative leaders and notify the Code Commission’s executive secretary in writing when the transfer occurs. Upon transfer, the James K. Polk Memorial Association is removed from the state’s scheduled termination list.
