More nursing pathways for Tennessee students
Beginning July 1, 2025, the law expands nursing pathways at public schools governed by the Tennessee Board of Regents. Students can enter practical nursing programs by meeting high school diploma or equivalent qualifications and school admission requirements, and being admitted. These schools can offer pre-practical nursing and practical nursing dual enrollment to high school students in grade 10 or higher. Dual enrollment students must meet the school's admission requirements and be admitted. Students who complete a practical nursing program can take the National Council Licensure Examination for Practical Nurses (NCLEX-PN). The Department of Health can adopt rules to carry out these changes through the state's administrative rulemaking process.
