Correction workers get retired dog care payments
Beginning July 1, 2025, Tennessee’s Department of Correction pays eligible active or retired department employees $85 monthly. Employees qualify when a retired dog that served the department is placed in their care and custody. The dog can retire because of age, a service-related injury, or any other reason. The money is only for the dog’s medical care and comes from the department’s budget under the General Appropriations Act. Payments are in addition to salary, retirement, disability, or other benefits. Employees must keep medical treatment records and submit copies by June 1 each year for the fiscal year ending June 30. They must report the dog’s death within 30 days. Payments stop when the department receives that notice.
