Medical examiners retain death investigation authority
The death-certificate rules do not block county medical examiners from investigating deaths when Tennessee law requires an inquiry. This applies under Tennessee Code § 68-3-502 or the Post-Mortem Examination Act. Examiners must certify the death certificate, complete and sign its medical certification, or file the certificate as required by law. This protection and these duties took effect when the act became law.
Doctors need written agreements for death certificates
For deaths covered by Tennessee Code § 68-3-511(2), (4), or (6), attending doctors must agree in writing to sign the death certificate. The written agreement must be with the deceased at the place of death. This requirement took effect when the act became law.
