Tennessee education board gains broader subpoena powers
Effective upon becoming law, Tennessee’s state education board chair or the chair’s designee can issue broader subpoenas. These can require people to appear or provide relevant items, including documents, videos, and audio recordings. The power covers educator licensing investigations inside or outside Tennessee. These investigations concern revoking, suspending, denying, or refusing to renew a license, or formally reprimanding a licensed educator. The power also covers accountability hearings for local school agencies operating public schools, or public charter schools, with D or F grades. The chair or designee must consider the requested appearance or items material or relevant to the investigation or hearing.
