Optional merit pay for Tennessee educators
The law took effect upon enactment and applies starting in the 2025-2026 school year and every school year afterward. Tennessee school districts can choose merit pay to reward high-performing educators or encourage educators to meet or exceed expectations. Awards can only increase pay, through a one-time bonus or salary increase. Awards must follow the district’s salary schedule approved by the state education commissioner for that school year. Districts can skip awards if added state funding, compared with a prior year, is too small to cover them. Districts do not have to increase local salary spending to continue earlier merit awards. Educators are not guaranteed extra pay.
