Apprentices encouraged on large state construction projects
Beginning November 1, 2026, the law encourages apprenticeships on Tennessee state construction contracts worth at least $1 million. Covered work includes construction, repairs, renovation, and demolition of buildings, facilities, or other physical structures in Tennessee. State agencies are encouraged to ask bidders whether anyone working on the project will employ apprentices. Contractors, subcontractors, and others working at any project stage are encouraged to employ apprentices through certified or registered apprenticeship programs. Neither the bidding question nor apprentice hiring is required, and the law provides no direct payment or guaranteed job.
