Prevention grants help students in Tennessee
The law takes effect upon enactment and creates a three-year school substance abuse and violence prevention pilot. Tennessee’s education department awards grants of up to $13,300 each to exactly three local education agencies. The pilot begins in the 2026–2027 school year and ends July 1, 2029. Applicants must already have a student prevention program and submit the department’s application form by its deadline. Recipients must teach students in grades 3–12 how to avoid tobacco, alcohol, and illegal drugs. Lessons must run throughout the school year, fit students’ ages and development, and follow state coordinated school health guidelines. Programs must teach healthy choices, drug-refusal skills, self-management, social skills, and factors that increase or reduce substance use and violence. They must also involve families and communities in building students’ lasting resilience against substance use, mental health challenges, and preventable disorders. Recipients must report on program effectiveness and the prior school year’s lesson content by June 30, starting June 30, 2027. Reports go to the state education, mental health and substance abuse, and human services departments, plus relevant legislative committee chairs.
